Hey lovelies! There are so many cosmetic brands that are not available in Australia and Urban Decay is unfortunately one of them. I drool and lust over them every time a beauty guru mentions an Urban Decay product. Currently, I own three UD products - the Naked 2 palette, Eyeshadow Primer Potion, and the De-Slick Oil Control Makeup Setting Spray.
I purchased the spray from BeautyBay for AUD$29.90 (118ml) instead of AUD$33.00 when they were on sale. I was contemplating on getting the well known All Nighter Long-Lasting Makeup Setting Spray but seeing that I have oily/ combination skin, the De-Slick option seemed more suitable for me. Mary bought the All Nighter Setting Spray since she has drier skin.
Just to give you a brief background, the UD Makeup Setting sprays are in fact, made by Skindinavia who were one of the firsts to bring makeup finishing sprays to the market. Skindinavia claims of their makeup finishing/ setting sprays to do the following:
Skindinävia's patented technology forms a lightweight, breathable web on top of your makeup that slowly releases over 16 hours. The timed-release evaporation retains moisture longer while also drawing heat away from the skin as it slowly evaporates throughout the day. The results are fresh, cool makeup for up to 16 hours.
- Keeps makeup fresh throughout the day
- Preserves full coverage
- Prevents color loss
- Controls excess oil production
- Diminishes shine
- Retains moisture longer
Ok first of all, why does it come with two lids?? My guess is, the first lid is to minimise contamination and the second one is for...looks. In other words the second lid is only there to complete the slick look of the packaging. If you guys know the real reason, please enlighten me!
The instructions say to spray it in a "T" or "X" motion on your face where I assume you only require two strokes in total. But I found the spray to be diffusing too abrupt and fast to achieve these motions in two fluid strokes. Each spray is only enough to cover a quarter of my face which means I end up using 4-5 sprays. This is not because the bottle releases too little of the product per spray, but rather that the speed of pressing down on the pump is hard to control so I end up pressing down too quickly. I'm not sure if you guys get what I'm trying to say here...
Performance wise, the spray does a great job at maintaining both foundation and eye makeup for a good 8 hours. Now let's put it to the test! Here are some before, during, and after shots.
This is right after I finished my makeup and sprayed a generous amount of the De-Slick Makeup Setting Spray.
This is couple hours (3-4 hrs) after I applied the spray. Excuse the gross-ness and the wardrobe change! The blotting test shows that I still oil up on my T-zones but that's no surprise to me really. But my makeup still looks pretty good!
And this is the after shot without having done any touch-ups throughout the day. You can see my shiny forehead and nose. Lip colour is definitely gone but eye makeup is still visible.
Here are some before & after shots side-by-side. This is a good 8-9 hrs after I applied the spray. I am definitely shinier on the right (and much more tired looking) but you can see that my foundation stayed on amazingly well.
Another before & after shot focusing on the eye makeup. I can confidently say that 90% of the eye makeup stayed put.
- No need for foundation touch-ups
- No scent
- Light-weight and is barely noticeable on the skin
- Prolongs makeup even after sweating
- Not readily available in Australia
- Sprays too abruptly
- Two lids?? Why?
- Minimal control of excess oil and shine
I don't know about "keeping makeup fresh throughout the day" or "diminishing shine" but the Urban Decay De-Slick Oil Control Makeup Setting Spray definitely preserves full coverage and prevents colour loss as it claims. I don't blame them for the oiliness though. My skin has a tendency to oil up no matter what. *shakes fist*
I am particularly impressed by how well it helps to prolong my eye makeup as well as my foundation. Although I did use the Urban Decay Eyemakeup Primer Potion on my eyelids so I can't be 100% sure that the spray did all the work.
I have used the spray on special occasions such as Balls and birthday parties where dancing i.e. sweating was inevitable. And my makeup still looked pretty good at the end of the night.
Although I do love this spray, I would only use it for special events where prolonged makeup is utterly necessary. I recommend it to those who have oily to combination skin and for those who find their makeup half gone by the end of the day.
Love, Court :)
